Words on the Wall

Words on the Wall is a regular poetry and spoken word event held at the Coach & Horses in Hexham, Northumberland (and previously at the County Hotel), founded and hosted by Joe. It began, with unfortunate timing, in February 2020, followed by an 18-month long pandemic-enforced hiatus before returning in October 2021.

Events are held on Saturday afternoons, starting at 2.30pm, usually on the third Saturday of February, June and October. Each event features two guest poets, with a focus on established published writers showcasing work from a recent collection or pamphlet. There’s also an open mic section (though we don’t actually use a mic) where anyone is welcome to share their own work. Entry is pay-as-you-feel (and paying nothing is fine).

The Words on the Wall open mic has provided a platform for many local poets, some of whom have been sharing their work with a live audience for the very first time. Guest poets have included Louise Fazackerley, Matthew Hedley Stoppard, Sarah Wimbush, Rowan McCabe, Julia Deakin and Oz Hardwick.

“Fantastic time performing at Hexham’s Words on the Wall. Joe Williams is a super host. Warm and giving, creates a super vibe.”

“One of my favourite things about Words on the Wall is how it brings together both local poets and those from further afield. It keeps things fresh and gives us the chance to hear from the wider area than just the North East. I also love how it encourages people to get up and have a go, often for the first time or after a long break. Everyone is always really supportive and encouraging.”

“What an event! Prince Harry, sex and the Apostles, loss and oranges… Beautiful and brutal poetry. Thank you so much, Joe.”
